Webber's Appointment

Charlotte knew exactly how and why the council picked Laura. It was because of Charlotte. Doc Davis took Charlotte aside while the decision was being made and asked what she thought of naming Laura. "You're the first public woman we've had in Almond Springs," he admitted, "And frankly we would never have considered her except for you." Charlotte endorsed Laura heartily but wondered aloud, "What does Louis think of the idea? He and Laura don't always agree at church?" The doctor responded cryptically, "Don't worry about Louis. He'll follow my lead. He has to." Now Charlotte understood why Louis was beholden to Doc Davis. What she did not know was how ready the town was for another "public woman."
